ECDIS - Electronic Chart Display and Information System

ECDIS Introduce

An Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS) is a computer-based navigation information system that complies with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations and can be used as an alternative to paper nautical charts. Integrating a variety of real-time information, it is an automated decision aid capable of continuously determining a vessel’s position in relation to land, charted objects, navigation aids and unseen hazards.

An ECDIS system includes a computer, display, application software and electronic chart data.

An ECDIS system displays the information from electronic navigational charts (ENC) or Raster Navigation Charts (RNC) and integrates position information from position, heading and speed through optionally navigational sensors such as radar, Navtex, automatic identification systems (AIS), sailing directions and fathometer to provide a new navigational solution instead of paper charts.

There are some aspects being used to consider if ECDIS is appropriate and acceptable to be installed onboard. For example: whether that ECDIS complies with IMO regulations or not; ECDIS has to be inspected and approved by an accredited organization or an Flag State authorized classification, such inspection procedure is built by IEC, strictly complies with IMO regulations and regulations number S52 and S56 of IHO on electronic chart ENC.

ECDIS Implementation Schedule

ECDIS is required to be installed on all new build vessels with keels laid either on or after 1st July 2012. Existing vessels will be required to retrofit the system at the first survey after the dates outlined in the regulations depending on the vessel type and size as follows:

Note: Ships may be exempt from the requirements if they will be taken permanently out of service within two years after the implementation date specified.
